NARA, JAPAN – Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) held an opening ceremony on June 26, 2026, for the “NAIST Shushin Residence” which officially operating on July 1, 2026, in Nakayama-cho, Nara City.
The residence is NAIST’s first international exchange facility located outside the main campus. It is designed to accommodate international interns and researchers to encourage exchange in the university community. “NAIST Shushin Residence” was made possible through the generous support of Iida Group, Iida Co., Ltd. by providing its former company dormitory for NAIST to operate as an international residence. Having supported for NAIST international students for many years, Iida Group represents another milestone in its longstanding partnership with NAIST.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from Iida group, Iida Co., Ltd, local community leaders, NAIST staffs, and international students. Among those invited were Dr. Berry Juliandi, President of Indonesia NAIST Alumni Association (INAA), and Dr. Fajar Sofyantoro, NAIST alumnus, representing the Indonesian alumni community. Their attendance reflected the close relationship between NAIST and its alumni network in Indonesia, which continues to support the international engagement and academic collaboration.
During the ceremony, President Kazuhiro Shiozaki highlighted the significance of transforming an existing company residence into a place that supports international exchange and talent development. He also expressed his sincere appreciation for Iida Group‘s continued commitment to foster a welcoming environment for international students and researchers.
In recognition of the company’s outstanding contributions to the University’s education, research and international exchange, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Iida Group, Iida Co., Ltd.
Ms. Eri Iida shared the story behind her company’s support on international . The late former chairperson, Ms. Sachiko Iida, once welcomed international students from Indonesia and set a goal of supporting ten students earn doctoral degrees. Since then, Iida group has continued supporting international students by helping create a place where they can focus on their studies and build friendships across cultures.
Speaking for the international students, Mr. Maxmilyand Leiwakabessy thanked IIDA GROUP for its long-standing support. He described the residence as a welcoming place where international students can start their life in Japan with confidence, support one another, and make the most of their internship.
After the ceremony, guests toured the residence, including the shared kitchen and lounge. Many hoped the shared spaces would encourage international exchange and make NAIST an even better place for international students and researchers.
The residence is part of NAIST’s work under the MEXT-supported J-PEAKS initiative, which strengthens international exchange and encourages collaboration across research fields and cultures. NAIST hopes the Shushin Residence will become a lively hub connecting international students, researchers, and the wider NAIST community.
